Weather in Korea
During the period (Oct. 21- Oct. 24)
of the 7th Korean Astrophysics Workshop on Dynamics of Disk
Galaxies, the weather in Seoul is expected to be mild, but a little bit cooler
than usual. The forecast predicts that the highest temperatures during the day
would be about 17o C (or 63o F) and the lowest
temperature during the night and early morning would be about 8o C
(or 46o F). Please check out the weather http://www.accuweather.com/en/kr/south-korea-weather or http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/KSXX0037 before your departure.
Transportation (from Airport to Hotel)
All the foreign participants are
going to stay at the Hoam Faculty House, located just outside the main campus
of the Seoul National University. The most convenient (and recommended) way to
get to the hotel from Incheon-Seoul International Airport (ICN) is to take
Airport limousine bus #6017 at the
airport. The stops for this bus route can be easily found when you exit the
arrival floor of the Passenger Terminal through Exit 6B or 13A. There are ticket booths around the
exits. Please buy a ticket amounting to 15,000 KRW (you can use your credit card
at the ticket booths). The last stop of this bus is, conveniently, the Hoam Faculty House. It normally takes 70min - 80
min from the airport to the hotel, but it may take longer depending on the
traffic in Seoul. The departure times of this bus at the airport are given in
the Table below.

Hotel
When you arrive at the Hoam Faculty
House (http://www.hoam.ac.kr/eng/), you will find a building shown to
the right: this is the main building in which the reception desk and a
restaurant are located
We have secured a block of rooms at
the Hoam Faculty House in order for all the foreign participants to stay during
the meeting. We have assigned a room to each participant depending on his/her
request and the length of stay. When you check in, please tell your name to a
receptionist. English-speaking receptionist(s) will be available for 24 hours a
day.
There is a restaurant (called
Shangri-La) inside the main building. They serve buffet-style breakfast for 15,000
KRW per person. They also serve Korean-, Japanese-, and Western-style meals for
lunches and dinners, but these are very expensive. They also have an out-door
café where they serve some foods and drinks if weather permitting. The map below shows the buildings
and café in the Hoam Faculty House.
Town Bus and Subway
The main campus of the Seoul
National University (SNU) is within a walking distance from the Hoam Faculty
House, so that it may be a good exercise to take a walk to the SNU. If you
instead want to take a bus, the #2 town buses are available, which run frequently
between the SNU and Nakseongdae subway station (nearest subway station to the
Hoam Faculty House). The part of the route of this bus toward the Nakseongdae
station is shown here. The bus fare for one-way trip is 850 KRW for
adults, 550 KRW for students with age between 13-19, and 300 KRW for children
(age between 6-12), which can be paid to the driver in cash. If you want to
look around downtown Seoul, you might want to first go to Nakseongdae subway
station by taking a #2 bus at the Hoam Faculty House, and then take Subway
Line 2 (dubbed the green line) there. The Seoul subway map can be found
at http://www.seoulmetro.co.kr/station/eng/linemap.action
Workshop Venue
Entire workshop will be held at the
International Conference Hall (ICH) located in the first floor of Building
#25-1 in the main campus of SNU. The location of the ICH is indicated at the SNU
map shown below
Shuttle between the workshop Venue and Hotel
While the ICH is within a good
walking distance from the hotel (taking about 30 min), we will provide free shuttle
services between the venue and the Hoam at every morning and afternoon during
the meeting. The shuttle departure times are

The

USD) for students, which is to be paid at the on-site registration desk by cash
and only by cash.
Banquet
We are going to have a banquet in
the Mugunghwa Hall located at the Convention Center of the Hoam Faculty House
on Oct. 22, 6:30PM. The banquet is covered by the registration fee.
Wednesday Afternoon Tour
The participants who signed up for
the DMZ tour on Wednesday afternoon need to pay 45,000 KRW (or 45 USD) per person
at the time of on-site registration by cash (and only by cash) in exchange for
a tour ticket. The tour buses will leave the meeting venue at Oct. 23, 12:30 on
time, so please come to the venue by 12:20 after having a lunch. Please make
certain that you carry a tour ticket as well as your passport when you board on the bus. This is very important because you are
not allowed to enter the DMZ without a valid passport.
Passport of Invited Speaker
This is only to invited speakers. We
need to have a photocopy of the passport of each invited speaker as well as a
copy of the page of immigration stamp received on arrival. Invited speakers,
please bring your passport on Oct. 23 and pass it to the registration desk
before 9:30AM. We also need to have some documents signed by you. We will make
the photocopies of relevant pages of your passport and return it to you during
the morning coffee break.
Meals
We will provide all participants
with lunches at one (Building #75-1 on the SNU map) of the University
cafeterias from Oct. 21 to Oct. 24. A lunch coupon will be distributed at the
registration desk after the end of the morning session each day. Then, we walk
together to the cafeteria for lunch.
Some sandwiches, juices, milk, etc.
will also be provided every morning at the workshop venue. All the other meals including
breakfasts and dinners (except for banquet) are not covered.
Eatery on Campus and Nearby Area.
As the SNU is a big university, there are
many cafeterias and lounges around the campus. Partially supported by the
university, they serve meals at a cheap price (between 2,500 – 4,000 KRW)
The map
below shows the campus around the venue (Building #25-1). The cafeteria located
in the Building #75-1 is the place for lunches of this workshop. Building #63
is the Student Union in which cafeterias, book store, souvenir shop, etc. are
placed. There is a café in Building #501 across the road from the venue.
The map
below shows the area near the rear gate, close to the Hoam Faculty House Buildings
#919 and #912 have Dome cafeterias, serving meals during 07:30-09:30,
11:30-13:30, and 17:30-19:30 for weekdays, and 08:00-09:30, 11:30-13:30, and
18:00-19:30 for weekends. Building #920 has Global House, serving beer, wine,
and dining between 15:00-02:00 during weekdays and Sunday. (The Golbal Hours is
closed on Saturday.) These places are within about 10-15 min from the Hoam
Faculty House.
If you want
to try more authentic Korean foods (Korean BBQ for example), you might want to
take a #2 town bus from the Hoam Faculty House to go toward Nakseongdae subway
station. (Or, you might want to take a walk, which takes about 20-25 min.)
The
following map shows the regions around Nakseongdae subway station, with the red
lines indicating the route of #2 town bus. There are many Korean restaurants
and pubs in the shared areas.
