Events for the public
In order to give the public opportunities of getting closer to the field of Astronomy, the Astronomy Program at Seoul National University had an astronomy-event once a year from 1983 to 1997. To improve this event, since the year of 1998, it has been held every month from March to November. It is hoped that the general public would have better understanding about stars and the universe through the event.
2. The Complete schedule for the event
The event held in May and September is for elementary school students; thus, only elementary school students and their teachers/guiders are allowed to attend in those months. Furthermore, there will be no lecture due to the fact that the event is for elementary school students. In other months, anyone from middle school students to adults, who are interested in Astronomy, may attend the event. Exception : The event held in April is a special one for teachers; therefore, the general public may not attend the event in April.
4. How to apply for the event
For the smooth process during an event, only 30 persons will be allowed for each event. Moreover, families and friends as groups may apply. However, a group of people consisted of more than 10 may not make a reservation. Reservations can be made from the next Monday after the event-held week to two days before the next event. (As an example, for the event on April 28th, the reservations will be made from March 26th to April 26th.) E-mail, phone-call, and fax may be used to make reservations. Applicant's name, age(name of the school and grade), applicant's telephone number, and number of people In your group must be informed to reserve. If there is any concern or question, ask through e-mail or phone-call.
5. Content for the event The content might differ by months;nevertheless, the tentative content would be the following.
* Lecture on Astronomy (except for the event for elementary school students)
* Planetarium Viewing (celestial sphere projection dorm)
* Visit the Observatory (24inch telescope, solar telescope, radio telescope, astronomy laboratory, etc.)
* Observation open to the public
6. Hours for the event
From March to September except July and August, an event starts at 6:30 at night. In October and November, it starts at 5:30 PM. Although it is not known what time an event ends, it is expected to finish at around 9:00 or 10:00 PM. In July and August, because of observing the Sun, the event starts at 2:00 in the afternoon.
